8/12/2007 - The Ride for the Future

I found myself last week sitting in my son's 1996 Buick Roadmaster station wagon, mainly sitting, but occasionally driving.  My mother was wedged into the last remaining spot in the vehicle's front seat, with 5 plastic gallon jugs of water at her feet, a box of delicious Indiana peaches at her left elbow, a stack of road maps on her lap, with my purse, a video camera with plug in charger, and bags of ginger snaps, maple syrup candies, bagels, Reeses Pieces, and Oreos taking up the balance of the space between us...

In the last 24 hours, the Ride for the Future team encountered:

  • 110 miles of scenic road
  • Many long time and former smokers encouraging them to continue their mission and telling horror stories of the results of smoking.
  • 6 dogs
  • 1 donkey (named Hokey Poky)
  • 1 beautiful sunset

In the last few days, the team has been in encountering lots of winds. They are excited to be out of the prairie lands, and getting some protection of the winds from the many trees they are seeing now. They've been handing out a lot of business cards which they recently had printed. The card encourages people to come to this web site to sign the pledge to quit smoking. The expedition is half over!

Currently in Fessenden, North Dakota, the Ride for the Future team is preparingfor the day's ride. Last night they arrived by the light of the setting sun, which was a change from the usual earlier arrival times. When passing through Minot, the team took time to enjoy the food, rides and sights of the North Dakota state fair. The team meets more people along the way who share stories of family and loved ones who are suffering or have suffered from the effects of smoking.

7/19/2007 - Location: New Town, ND

The Ride For The Future cycling team reports in from New Town, North Dakota, while preparing for their day of pedaling. With encounters with lightning storms, fast biking, and a crazed dog, the team has a lot to share. Katherine's parents, Victor and Jane Wilson, recently took over driving the chase car, cooking and even putting in some pedaling miles on the road. On another note, the interview from July 16th ended up being featured on the front page of the Williston Herald. The team is excited because the paper has a circulation of about 17,000 copies.

Taking a day off in Williston, North Dakota, the Ride For The Future team taking a day off from cycling to do some bike maintenance, as well as have some business cards printed which contain their pledge and website URL. Spencer prepares for an interview with the Williston Herald, where they will be interviewing and photographing the team for an upcoming news article.

The Ride For The Future team reaches a milestone today, having pedaled 1000 miles! They call in during the lunch break of this 100+ miles day, and report it's one of the hottest yet, but they are having a great time.

7/10/2007 PM - Location: Cut Bank, MT
48°38'9.18"N 112°20'1.37"W

After riding 105 miles today, the team arrives in Cut Bank Montana. Having crossed the continental divide, the team continued onto the Lewis and Clark trail for a bit. They report beautiful views along the way, but are looking forward the most right now to the view inside Pizza Hut and then the inside of their eye lids when get a chance to sleep later.

7/10/2007 AM - Location: West Glacier, MT

The team calls in for a 9AM check in, in preparation for their ride from West Glacier to East Glacier. The team is approaching the continental divide today, and anticipate about 3000 feet of elevation climb. The team has mailed a Mini DV tape and CD of photos, which will be posted as they arrive here at the home base. On a side note, Katherine Wilson announces that Montana is officially her favorite state!

The RFTF team calls in from Libby, Montana, before they head in the direction of Glacier National Park. With reports of temperatures upwards of 110 degrees, the team is looking forward to taking the afternoon off. Unfortunately, the end of the call was lost, so expect an abrupt ending to the audio file.

Having started at sea level, the team has been climbing significant hills each day. The highest to date, Washington Pass at 5300' elevation, helps prepare team Ride For The Future for the Rocky Mountains. Brian Gamble calls in to give us a quick update regarding anticipation of the upcoming day's break to repair bikes, troubleshoot video problems, and to relax a bit.
