Ride For The Future

Ride for the Future - A Service Expedition

Expedition Crew: Jamie Beaber, Spencer Case, Katherine Wilson, and Brian Gamble
Departure Date: June 28th, 2007
Departing From: Anacortes, Washington
Expedition Duration: approximately 65 days
Final Destination: Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland

Our team of four exceptionally devoted, involved, and adventurous students and alumnae are from Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. We are united by our attitudes to constantly challenge ourselves while exploring new and unique ways to affect the world. Our team shares a vision to “Ride for the Future” by raising lung cancer awareness during the summer months of 2007. Through our cycling from Washington State to Chestertown, Maryland, we hope to heighten lung health awareness and inspire people to quit smoking. This journey will take nine weeks; we will pedal over 3,500 miles. We are fully devoted to this expedition this opportunity to represent our community, our supporters, and our belief in balanced living. Our overall purpose is much larger than the journey - as we believe there will be countless benefits that will follow behind each mile we ride.

We will be riding to raise lung cancer awareness and to encourage people to quit smoking. Each of us is committed to the fight against lung cancer and nicotine addiction. Our determination is fueled by the desire to provide a new motivation for Americans to quit smoking. Our motto stands “If WE can ride across the country, YOU can quit smoking!” Before our departure – as well as during our trip – we will ask those willing to quit smoking to sign a pledge agreeing that they will do so before or upon our completion of our journey.

Our web space represents our mission and allow donors to track our progress through access to video and audio updates. Our site will also provide links for visitors to offer financial support as well as to be recognized for that support. In addition, friends across the country who view our site will have the opportunity to make donations directly to the American Lung Association of the District of Columbia.

This project is the foundation of a venture that will be continued after our days at Washington College. After our journey across America ends, we will keep our visions of service, leadership, and commitment alive by establishing a fund that will allow other dedicated students to pursue their causes while influencing the world in a positive way. In the fall of 2007, we will continue our efforts by fundraising and compiling donations to further the fund. Efforts from all parties will be an investment not just in our journey - they will ultimately fund a mission that potentially can impact the nation for many years to come.

We feel that our expedition will inspire family and friends who are addicted to nicotine to quit smoking. Family and friends make life worth living. If you offer your assistance to us, you will not only be supporting our vision, but you will also be encouraging people to kick the habit, ultimately living longer, healthier, and happier lives.
