Why Do I Want to Bike Across America?

I am part of our cross-country bike expedition for lung cancer because my family, myself included, and many friends have or at some time been controlled by the tremendous power of nicotine addiction. For me, after four years of smoking, quitting was one of the hardest challenges of my life.  I feel that our team's devotion to this expedition will inspire people to commit to quitting and ultimately lead to significant changes that will touch peoples lives in a big way!

Biography:

For as long as I can remember my adventurous spirit has consistently lead me to explore beyond my personal comfort zones. A native to the rolling hills of northeast Ohio, I started mountain biking when I was 13. After a serious bike crash, I directed my attention toward mountaineering. I ventured into the wilderness for the first time when I was 17.  I participated on a 21 day Rocky Mountain mountaineering expedition with the Colorado Outward Bound School.  When I was 19, I joined a 42 day mountaineering expedition in the Indian Himalayas with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Shortly after, I found myself climbing various routes in the Alps of New Zealand’s south island.  After a year of college and rowing, I ventured up to Alaska with the National Outdoor Leadership School.  Our NOLS alumni team launched a successful 32 day summit expedition, ascending one of Denali’s challenging northern routes.  A study abroad experience in the winter and spring of 2006 allowed for extensive climbing in the Irish mountains. For the summer months of 2006,  I worked in northern Thailand as program leader for a high school adventure travel organization. In the fall of 2006,  fellow students, a professor, and I designed an “Outdoor Leadership” class for the curriculum at Washington College.  I am the former president of the Outdoor Adventure Club and presently serve as a residential assistant at Washington College
